All Time Great Steps Down At Tennessee
Pat Summitt has influenced young women for nearly four decades. She's finally stepping down as women's head basketball coach at Tennessee. Her long time assistant, Holly Warwick will replace Summitt as the head coach. Summitt retires as the winning-est coach in basketball history. Summitt is facing a tough battle with Alzheimer's disease. It's one of the bigger reasons she has decided to step down as head coach. She will have a coach emeritus role, meaning she can give advice, sit behind the bench during games, but not participate in practices. The White House announced the President will bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom upon Summitt. It's the highest civilian honor given out by the President. Larry Brown Heading To SMU
Basketball Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown will return to coaching next season, at Southern Methodist. He has agreed to a deal, but it hasn't been announced as he works out contracts for his assistant coaches. Brown has offered Illinois State coach Tim Jankovich the "head coach in waiting" position with SMU, but Jankovich is torn about leaving a 21-14 team. Jerrance Howard and Rod Strickland will also join Brown's staff. Howard will be the main recruiter with the Mustangs. Strickland has spent the last couple of seasons in an administrative role with the Kentucky Wildcats. Brown has been out of coaching since 2010, when he resigned as head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. Brown won the NCAA Championship in 1988, nearly 25 years ago. He's also the only coach to win a NBA Championship and NCAA title. SMU will join the Big East in a few years and it needs a headline-grabbing coach like Brown. Calipari Not Interested in NBA?
Kentucky head coach John Calipari stated recently that he's not interested in jumping to the NBA. A high profile position, New York Knick's head coach, is available and many experts are speculating whether Calipari will return to coach in the NBA. Calipari is coming off his first NCAA National Championship. He says that Kentucky is one of the best jobs in all of basketball, and that he's trying to get to UCLA's 11 national championships. Calipari coached the New Jersey Nets after taking UMass to the Final Four in 1996. After getting fired 20 games into his third season, Calipari was an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers. Calipari can make the jump to the NBA at any time.
